22nd International Documentary Film Festival Flahertiana
October 10 - 15, 2012, Perm, Russia

The event, now one of the major documentary showcases, is dedicated to the legacy and artistic principles of Robert Flaherty, a well-known father figure of world's documentary cinema. Since 2006, Flahertiana became annual, internationally recognized platform based on solid programming and prestigeous competitions and awards including Grand Prix for the best documentary of the festival, Award for the best long documentary, Award for the best short documentary and FIPRESCI Award.

Martin Mareček's domestically appraised documentary Solar Eclipse enjoys progressive international recognition with appearances in Poland, Mexico, and recently sweeping the Grand prize at the Moldavian festival Cronogaf. His insight into the troubling reality of a Czech mission once sent to Zambia may earn him yet another award, since it is about to feature in the main competition programme in Perm.

Similarly, the Russain documentary The Tundra Book. A Tale of Vukvukai, the Little Rock initially scored throughout the country of its origin. In 2011, the National Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences of Russia eventually awarded the film with "NIKE" Award for the best documentary. This year, however, the film even reached audiences at various internationally renowned events, such as Hot Docs Toronto (Canada), Visions du Réel (Switzerland) or Trento Film Festival (Italy).

In 2006, Milan and Tomas electrified a school campus and a hospital in a detached Zambian village. After four years, they return for the last time to find out about their system's failures, repair it and hand it over at last. The film follows them through chaotic days as well as pitch black nights and provides a fresh insight into the pitfalls of humanitarian development projects. Short circuits of all sorts, blending and dissolving of different worlds, rituals of gratitude and concepts of solutions. With no attempts to declare or evaluate anything, Solar Eclipse becomes a situation probe examining various forms of light and darkness. Will the two Czech linkboys succeed in lighting up the Zambian bushland?
