We closely work with key int. festivals, broadcasters, distributors, sales agents, markets, or training initiatives and serve as the GATEWAY TO EAST EUROPEAN DOCUMENTARY FILM.

East Silver Market Piles Up New Docs

The 9th East Silver Market closed this year’s edition’s call for entries on July 31. There are nearly 600 documentaries from 34 Central and East European countries submitted for the preselection. A board of experts will pick the selection of those documentary films that meet either top quality criteria and show high international appeal as well - these will represent the best of contemporary East European documentary cinema in autumn in Jihlava. East SIlver team would like to thank all the submitters, the selection results will be released in September.

As we are finishing the selection of films for the 2012 market edition, there is an interesting set of stats to be noted: the most submissions came from Czech Republic and Poland (84 and 83 respectively), followed by Russia (73) and Austria (43) taking the fourth place. All the submitted films are also considered as the potential 4th Silver Eye Awards nominees. Every year a collection of 33 documentary films in three categories is nominated for the annual Silver Eye Awards – award designed in order to honour the best documentary films from the region. The nominees, as well as the juries, consisting of international sales agents, broadcasters, buyers and festival representatives, will be announced at the end of September. The winner in each category receives not only an unique award trophy, but a prize money of 1500 EUR and one-year festival service of the East Silver Caravan. A traditional submission process includes also the arrival of films from certain regions recommended by our partners, such as Krakow Film Foundation with selection of new Polish docs, DOK Market (DOK Leipzig) offering the most interesting German docs.

East Silver Market, now held every year together with the spring session in Prague titled East Silver Videolibrary, is annually visited by prominent European and North American distribution company representatives, sales agents and festival selectors. In addition to that, all the selected films in the East Silver Market are digitalized and available online all year round through East Silver Streaming, which only strengthens the films’ display and their chances to be released or screened internationally. Last but not least, the concise overview of the market selection is usually arranged into a printed catalogue that is being distributed to film participating professionals, European film centers, at renowned film festivals and industry meetings.

Alongside the 9th East Silver Market, IDF organizes the second session of the 10th anniversary documentary workshop Ex Oriente Film, held within the industry programme organized in association with Jihlava International Documentary Film Festival. The festival organizers than support the industry programme with a producer’s workshop Emerging Producers, thematic initiative Inspiration Forum, or festival seminar Festival Identity.
