Our activities support filmmakers through all stages of completion – development, funding, production, post-production, and distribution. We aim at individual filmmakers (tailored consultations), groups of carefully selected professionals with projects or films (Ex Oriente Film, East European Forum, East Silver, Doc Launch, etc.), broader professional community (East Doc Platform), as well as the general public (portal www.DOKweb.net). We closely work with key int. festivals, broadcasters, distributors, sales agents, markets, or training initiatives and serve as the GATEWAY TO EAST EUROPEAN DOCUMENTARY FILM.

East Silver in Karlovy Vary

The biggest Czech film event, the 45th International Film Festival Karlovy Vary, starts this Friday. Besides eager filmgoers attracted by the latest films from around the world, the festival will also host many film professionals, sales agents, festival representatives and film organizations, including East Silver and the Institute of Documentary Film.

The main doc industry event co-organized by the Institute of Documentary Film is the annual Docu Talents from the East panel that offers a preview of upcoming new documentary films from Central and Eastern Europe. The panel will introduce ten projects in the form of short trailers and presentations, including upcoming Czech documentaries, such as All for the Good of the World and Nosovice! by Vít Klusák; Matchmaking Mayor by Erika Hníková or Bear Islands by Martin Ryšavý.

The East Silver team will be also present in Karlovy Vary and will represent the new short documentary film Little Bride by Polish director Leslaw Dobrucki. A tough inside look into the Turkish community in Germany delivers a chilling testimony of a young woman sent to Germany at 13 for an arranged wedding. There she faced mental and physical violence and after some time she managed to escape the community, but still lives in fear that her husband's family might take revenge. This short film is included in documentary competition.

There is about 2.5 million Turkish minority members in Germany. Every year there is at least a dozen of Turkish women beaten to death by their husbands or other family members. The actual scale of those crimes in Germany, where law and order are so highly val ued, is unknown — according to the official data, in Turkey there are committed more than 300 so-called honor killings annually and 40% of wives are violence victims. A Turkish girl was sent to Germany and forced to marry when she was 13 years old. Soon after, her hell has begun; she was beaten and abused in different ways. After several years she managed to run away; she has been hiding until now – only because of that she is able to tell us her life story.
