Eye over Prague
Oko nad Prahou, Czech Republic, 2010, 78 min, 35 mm, DV, Arts and Culture, Portrait
An extraordinary tale of Jan Kaplicky, one of the most consummate visionaries of modern architecture. Shot over 3 years in the UK, Czech Republic and Italy, the film portrays Kaplicky at the height of his profession and the petty political gamesmanship that denied him his crowning achievement. His most audacious building would have been the Czech National Library, a triumphant return to his home country and vindication of his uncompromising philosophy. The organic design was too forward-looking for the political powers in Prague, however, and the architect tragically died uncertain whether his achievement would ever be realized.

On Rubik's Road
Pa Rubika Celu, Latvia, 2010, 30 min, Digi Beta, Creative, Experimental
If the entire world can be reflected in a single drop of dew (and it can!), then why couldn’t it fit onto a single bicycle road in Latvia? A film about a world that walks, runs, crawls, sits, rides, flies. And falls. A world alive.

Other Eastern European documentaries at BAFICI:
Love History
Liebe Geschichte, Austria, 2010, 98 min, 35 mm, History, Society
The film is about women in Austria and Germany tracing their Nazi family history. They research the historical facts as well as the marks this past has left on their lives: how does it affect their personal relationships, love and political activism? The protagonists are shown in public spaces. Architecture from the 1950s, 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s and 2000s in Vienna are the locations for the film. They stand for the way National Socialism was dealt with in Austria and reflect the political currents during those eras.

Katka
Katka, Czech Republic, 2010, 90 min, 35 mm, HD, Creative, Longitudinal, Portrait
Helena Třeštíková's film is a remarkable documentary tracing fourteen years in the life of a young junkie and her futile battle with drug addiction. Why did she start taking drugs? She claims she wanted to be different. The year is 1996 and 19-year-old Katka lives in the Sananim therapy community in the town of Němčice with hope for a normal life – she dreams of having a boyfriend and even a family, some day. But there's no happy ending. The director records Katka's descent over the years into a spiral of theft, prostitution, physical and psychological deterioration – a spiral that is broken only by brief flashes of hope and resolutions to stop taking drugs. Katka's desire is sincere, but in the end drugs always win. Will Katka finally find the strength when she becomes pregnant and motherhood offers her life-sustaining motivation?
