Cinequest introduces Theatre Svoboda and Abendland

At the end of February, the 22nd Cinequest Film Festival in San Jose will present two East Silver Caravan titles, Czech documentary Theatre Svoboda by Jakub Hejna and Abendland by Nikolaus Geyrhalter.

Jakub Hejna’s film Theatre Svoboda portrays the life and work of his own grandfather, famous stage designer Josef Svoboda. For Hejna the film becomes also an intimate journey to learn who his grandfather was. Theatre Svoboda will hold its North American premiere at Cinequest.

Abendland by Nikolaus Geyrhalter is a film essay on contemporary society. Visually appealing as Geyrhalter’s previous work, Our Daily Bread explores how we live more and more in night – from hospitals and various night workers to party life and instant monitoring from CCTV cameras, offering a look under the cover of night.

The Cinequest Film Festival screens more than 200 titles from all over the world during the 14 days and many of them with premiere status. Cinequest is not only a festival, but also a starting platform for new talents (project Empowering Mavericks), including also distribution company or the production company Cinequest Mavericks Studio.

Production company: endorfilm, Czech TV, Young Film

Divadlo Svoboda , Czech Republic, 2011, 98 min, DCP, HD, Arts and Culture, Creative, Portrait

Theatre Svoboda portraits the life and work of the director’s grandfather, world-famous stage designer Josef Svoboda (1920–2002), who tried to juggle creative freedom, family life and political allegiances during the times of a communist regime. Svoboda was able to work for the top of world theatres, such as The Old Vic in London, The Metropolitan Opera in New York and La Scala in Milano. The film takes the viewer literally behind the scenes and reveals some of the secrets of Svoboda’s fascinating lifework through archive materials that have not been published yet.

Austria, 2011, 90 min, HD, Creative, Society

Western standard of living, civilization, and the urge to exclude others from it are the core of Geyrhalter's latest cinematic documentary essay. Entirely shot at night, Geyrhalter takes us on a very personal journey through the Western world and the structures that guarantee our "civilized" world. Sometimes darkness can help us to see things more clearly.
