All for the Good of the World and Nosovice
Vše pro dobro světa a Nošovic, Czech Republic, 2010, 82 min, 35 mm, Creative, Personal View, Social Issues
An original portrait of a Czech village that houses a giant car plant built by South Korea's Hyundai. Before the village turned into an industrial zone, many of the landowners had no intention of selling their plots of land... Not until many of them faced pressure from their neighbours who had accepted approx. EUR 4000 in compensation and not until they received death threats. Using nine protagonists, the film paints a portrait of a village changed beyond recognition. A humorous yet compelling film about a field that yields cars.
The Leader is Always Right
Lideri Khoveltvis Martalia, Georgia, 2010, 45 min, Digi Beta, DV, Politics, Society
Summer camps financed by the president in Georgia seem to offer lessons in nationalism, hatred and obedience. Since 2005, these camps have been attended by hundreds of thousands of boys and girls. The programme is clear: to cultivate a "love of the nation" among children. This primarily means developing animosity towards Russia, which has been interfering with the country's autonomy. Uniforms with the Georgian state symbol, flags on the cabins, ideological slogans and the rule that "the leader is always right" are all things that serve to remind each boy and girl of the past and to demand vengeance. A stark future is outlined when the children leave the camp with a clear idea of what "patriotism" means.

When reality has a different script from the one in your films, who wouldn't invent a country to fool themselves?Using rare footage from dozens of forgotten Yugoslav films, as well as never-seen-before archive from film sets and Tito’s private screenings, the documentary recreates the narrative of a country, the stories told on screen and the ones hidden behind it. Stars such as Richard Burton, Sofia Loren and Orson Welles add a touch of glamour to the national effort, appearing in super-productions financed by the state. Tito’s favorite film director, his projectionist who showed him films every night for 30 years, the most famous actor of partisan films, and the director of the film studios who was a secret policeman – all tell how the history of Yugoslavia was constructed on the screen.

Helena Třeštíková's film is a remarkable documentary tracing fourteen years in the life of a young junkie and her futile battle with drug addiction. Why did she start taking drugs? She claims she wanted to be different. The year is 1996 and 19-year-old Katka lives in the Sananim therapy community in the town of Němčice with hope for a normal life – she dreams of having a boyfriend and even a family, some day. But there's no happy ending. V I N Y L (Tales from the Vienna Underground)
Austria, United Kingdom, 2010, 94 min, HD, Arts and Culture, Experimental, Music
V I N Y L (tales from the Vienna underground) is the first feature-length documentary to reveal the interconnected world of experimental, trash & electronic musicians in Vienna, and how the artists in this historically unique space interpret which sounds make music in very different ways. V I N Y L is also partly a love letter to a cultural icon – vinyl records - which have been a part of so many people’s lives for decades, and which persist in the future of music creation & distribution, despite the pervasiveness of digital technology. In this film, vinyl is a metaphor for something we love, even for its imperfections and scratches, and so it is with these musicians’ love-hate relationship to their city. Some things must change, but some things will be important forever.

Beats of Freedom
Zew wolności , Poland, 2010, 73 min, 35 mm, Arts and Culture, Current Affairs, Environmental, History, Music, Politics
"Beats of Freedom" is a captivating film about the birth of rock music in Poland. In the times when life was controlled by the communist regime, music became an extremely powerful phenomenon. The Iron Curtain could not stop rock music, thanks to which young people could find their space of freedom. From the very beginning, Polish rock stood in opposition to the reality. The songs broke stereotypes and formed bonds among people. One particular freedom enclave was the festival in Jarocin, colourfully shown in the film thanks to previously unpublished archival materials.

Alexandru Solomon invites Ceausescu to revisit Romania, 20 years after he has been executed. The dictator haunts present-day capitalist society, emerged in the Wild East and often deeply rooted in its communist past. The film offers incredible access to top magnates – at home, in their offices and in their minds – building a bitter-sweet portrait of a new ruling class. Capitalism with a K – an Eastern European cocktail of power and money. This is now part of Greater Europe. Unavoidable!

The Declaration of Immortality
Deklaracja nieśmiertelności , Poland, 2010, 29 min, Beta, Personal View, Portrait
In his new film Marcin Koszałka returns to a forgotten genre, namely a mountain film. The protagonist of his story is Piotr “Mad” Korczak, somewhere in the background there is his rival Andrzej Marcisz. The director focuses on the decline of the career of the great master, provoking his reflection on his future life, when he will no longer be able to climb mountains. It’s a moving story about inability to come to terms with old age and about desire of immortality.
