Camelô - Street Hawkers in Rio de Janeiro
Camelô - Mao-de-obra expulsa, Brazil, Germany, 2007, 135 min, DVD, Social Issues, Society
Whether as sweets sellers in public busses, as drink sellers, or as one of the innumerable hotdog, snack or ware stands: the street hawkers are part of the cityscape of every Latin American metropolis including Rio de Janeiro. They represent the lion share of the so called informal labour sector. Camelô shows an insight into the lives of four of them: Luciana, Alexandre, Flávio and Carlos Augusto. The documentary also aims to analyze the causes of informality, which is responsible for more the 6% of the Brazilian GDP.
