EAST SILVER MARKET 2007 - NOW FULLY DIGITIZED!
The East Silver Documentary Film Market was opened for the fourth year at Jihlava IDFF and presented 346 documentary film in the video library, which was completely digitzed for the first time. There were 25 computers installed, all of which were in permanent used every day.
The catalogue along with a practical handbook were available to all visitors. For the first time, this year also crucial texts about Eastern European documentary films were published.
170 European film industry professionals visited the video library: these included representatives from television stations, film festivals, the media, film institutions and organizations, and also filmmakers, producers and distributors. EAST SILVER MARKET'S TOP LIST
The most watched films were the following:
No 1. A TOWN CALLED HERMITAGE, POUSTEVNA, DAS IST PARADIES, Czech Republic, 2007, directed by Ondřej Provazník, Martin Dušek
Rising above an entertaining mosaic of the lives of several inhabitants of the "uprooted" village of Dolní Poustevna on the Šluknov promontory - the Vietnamese girl Denisa, a group of retarded inmates from the local welfare institute or the German brothel-hunting tourist Volker - is the all-pervading shadow of the resettlement forced upon the German population after the war.
No. 2 NIGHTWALK, Czech Republic, Germany, 2006 directed by Andreas Wutz
Inspired by Alexandr Hackenschmied's film "Aimless Walk", the filmmaker sets on a journey through Prague. Pictures of night life on the outskirts of the metropolis are confronted with bits of sounds of the daily rush of the city centre. Animals in the zoo are asleep and we can hear a song by Bertold Brecht and Hanns Eisler.
No 3. PEACE WITH SEALS, MÍR S TULENI, Czech Republic, 2007, directed by Miloslav Novák
Film tells two stories teaching a lesson about human nature. The first one shows Gaston the sea lion which was carried off by flood waters down the Vltava river as far as Germany. After its death, the Prague ZOO set up a monument for the animal. Fifty years earlier, another sea lion called Odysseus was put into the Fontana di Trevi in Rome, Italy. The animal world meets with that of humans. What is the domestication of animals, and what is the domestication of people?
No 4. MOSQUITO PROBLEM AND OTHER STORIES, Bulgary, 2007, directed by Andrey Paounov
The Northern-Bulgarian city of Belene is troubled by insecurity. This sleepy town on the Danube earned undesired renown thanks to its communist labor camp and an unfinished nuclear power plant which was conserved in 1990 and has since been a subject of controversy. The film assembles a gallery of people bothered by their past more than by the swarming mosquitoes. A piano tuner, a former mayor, NATO soldiers based near-by, prostitutes and a Cuban worker who came for the construction of the power plant and stayed. These are the protagonists of a documentary swinging from comedy to sadness and back.
No 5. TENDER HEAT. WILD, WILD BEACH, ZHAR NEZHNYKH. DIKYI, DIKYI PLYAZH, Russia, 2007, directed by Alexander Rastorguev and Susanna Baranzhieva
Every morning during the last 25 years hereditary photographer Eugeniy and his camel are on their way to their habitual working place - a beach at the Black Sea shore, a world of NUDE people in all meanings of this word - nominal as well as figurative.
The film shows a variety of characters, which shape a unique portrait of the state of the world in which we live. Both irony and melancholy, cleanliness and meanness, love stories and betrayal, life and death are depicted in their development.
