East Silver is not just documentary film market, an annual event of one week. Its main purpose is to promote and enhance international distribution of creative documentaries from Central and Eastern Europe by mediating connection among key international industry players and local film professionals. With its year-round activities, East Silver provides assistance and guidance to producers, working with titles in various stage of development, mostly with completed films and projects in postproduction stage, which are ready for various distribution channels. Through its unique tools, the East Silver Caravan (festival service) and the East Silver TV Focus (designed to increase international TV broadcast), and industry networking events East Silver represents an important unique platform for local and international documentary professionals.
The East Silver Caravan represents a selection of some of the most interesting documentary films of the market that are submitted to more than 70 international film festivals during the year. The goal of the project is to help creative films get released on festivals and secure attention of industry professionals and audiences around the world.
East Silver TV Focus is designed to help documentaries with high broadcasting potential to find their broadcasters and matching TV slots. Individual TV buyers are than approached with the offer. Its no coincidendce that many of the commissioning editors and buyers visits East Silver Market in person, which helps us to keep ourselves informed about their actual needs. We are able to analyze and recommend the most suitable TV stations and professionals.
Apart from all those activities East Silver also offers various industry programme during the market: Industry screenings of upcoming documentary films, Co-production “breakfasts” - panels and meetings with professionals from selected countries (this year the focus is on Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Romania and Czech Republic), East Silver Tours and Talks of the Day with invited guests introducing distribution companies, film markets or important funding resources (e.g. Cinereach, Sundance Documentary Fund, IDFA Docs for Sale and Jan Vrijman Fund, AVEK).
In order to promote new unique documentaries and talents, in 2009 East Silver introduced the Silver Eye Awards for best documentary films at the market. As part of its promotion activities, East Silver offers possibility to submit films and offer discounts for producers to various important international documentary film markets (e.g., IDFA - Docs for Sale, HotDocs - DocShop, Thessaloniki DocMarket, FID Marseille, Discop EAST, Visions du réel - DocOutlook, DOK Leipzig). Silver Eye Awards are handed over during the Closing ceremony of Jihlava International Documentary Film Festival.
East Silver’s latest project is the East Silver Online Video Library with the last two editions of the market accessible to industry professionals. At the moment, professionals can at any time watch 541 films. To help professionals get oriented to the landscape of documentary cinema of Eastern Europe, East Silver annually publishes a catalogue with detailed information about films in the current edition.
